How to… Craft the perfect CV

A new year brings the promise of change, and for some it may mean dusting off their CV’s and looking for new job.

“If you have your sights set on a big career move on landing your dream job in 2023, your CV has to be up to scratch,” says marketing agency Penquin Human Resources (HR) Coordinator Fundi Twala and HR Director Aneemie Burger.

They advise:

  • If you decide to include a photo, use one that has not been touched up so you look like the person in the picture when you are interviewed.
  • Don’t use a selfie;
  • Include all the details HR departments need: contact information; work experience; with relevant certificates; and skills. When listing work experience note the most recent first;
  • Make sure it is mistake free – have someone proof read it;
  • Keep it short. Be creative to stand out, but not that it’s hard to understand; and
  • Include a summary of who you are, what you are good at and what you are looking for in your next position, and your experiences and achievements – both should be short and to the point so someone can get the sense of who you are at a glance.
